Opulence has only just begun to re-emerge in fashion, after the dark years, though it never really left the runway of Mr. de la Renta. His fall collection seemed especially extravagant, with incredibly rich textures on coats, dresses and skirts embroidered with gold. An Ottoman jacquard jacket at the beginning of the show — paired with a red fox skirt — was embroidered, according to the press notes, in “gold bouillon.” I swear it looked to me more like the real stuff than soup.
